Frequently Asked Questions

Useful Information

What does "Isshin Shorinji Ryu Honbu Dojo” mean?

Isshin Shorinji Ryu – This is the style of karate that you are learning. Its origin is Okinawa,n with Japanese influences.

Honbu Dojo - Traditionally, martial arts practitioners have referred to their workout site as a "dojo."

Honbu or 本部 means headquarters. Thus, "Honbu Dojo" is the main facility where the chief instructor conducts his/her instruction.

What can I expect in class?

The class generally lasts for about 1 1/2 hours. We do some stretching and warming up, then proceed into the workout portion of the class. Depending on your experience, you will either be under black belt supervision in the beginner’s class learning the basics of the system or with the main class learning various techniques and requirements.

Testing – How do I get my first belt? Does this cost extra?

First of all, we have no testing fees. In fact, there are no registration fees either! There are eight levels prior to achieving your black belt promotion. Through practice and training, you will learn the requirements for your next rank.

You will receive these requirements for your next rank when you get promoted. Our school is not a belt factory. You will be promoted when you are ready, and the black belts believe you should be promoted. You should NEVER ask for a rank. This is considered disrespectful.

Your focus is always on the journey and your personal development. The rank will come accordingly. We were told by our instructor many years ago, “The person makes the belt. The belt does not make the person.”
